The collection consists of the records of the S.I.O. Staff Council from its establishment in 1958 to the present. The collection includes minutes of meetings, rosters, committee reports. The collection includes some manuscripts, notes and audio recordings of remarks made by SIO directors at meetings of Staff Council. Minutes of the SIO Staff Council meeting of October 14, 1969 are missing. There is no record of a meeting for Fall 1970. The collection includes a volume of bound records of SIO Staff Council dated 1958-1964. This volume, compiled by the SIO Library, overlaps SIO Staff Council files. In 1959 and 1960, SIO Staff Council and the Academic Senate met jointly. For this reason, Staff Council minutes for those years also document actions of the Academic Senate.

The SIO Staff Council was created by SIO Director Roger Revelle in 1957 under Standing Orders of the Regents 8 Article 3 and 9 article 2(c) which gave campus executive officers authority for to create an Advisory Administrative Council.
